Propane Safety

At Avenir Energy, safe operations are our top priority. Propane is a clean, versatile and efficient energy source and one of the safest fuels available when used properly. We strongly recommend that you only have qualified propane technician service your appliances and tanks. Never attempt repairs yourself- Call Avenir Energy and have one of our qualified technicians assess the situation.

Detecting a Propane Leak

Propane has mercaptan added to it giving it a distinct odor, often described as a “rotten egg” smell, which helps you quickly identify leaks. If you suspect a propane leak due to a persistent smell, follow these steps:

Don’t Panic

Leave the area immediately in an orderly manner if you suspect a propane leak.

Avoid Flames, Sparks and Electricity

Extinguish flames and do not use lights, appliances or phones.

Shut Off the Propane Supply

Turn off the tank supply by turning the handwheel clockwise (to the right) as far as possible unless the leak appears to be coming from that area.

Call for Help

Contact the fire department or dial 911 from a safe distance (at least 20 ft from the source of the leak).

Do not re-enter the area until it is deemed safe. Contact Avenir Energy to have a technician turn the propane back on to check and re-light your appliances.

Propane Appliance Safety

Regular Maintenance

Have all of your propane appliances and propane tanks inspected regularly by one of Avernir Energy’s qualified technicians. Don’t forget to ask about our 24ProPlus Plan!

Know the Signs

Propane should always burn clean with a blue flame in your appliances. If you notice yellow, irregular flames or soot around your appliance that indicates that the propane isn’t burning properly and could result in carbon monoxide being released.

Install Detectors

Place carbon monoxide detectors near propane appliances to monitor air quality and alert you in case of a leak. In the event of a leak, vacate the property immediately and contact 911.

Ventilation is Key

Ensure all appliances are properly vented outside to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Do not use outdoor propane appliances, such as grills and generators indoors or in an enclosed area.

Clean Energy Source

Propane has the lowest carbon content of any fossil fuel, minimizing carbon monoxide and greenhouse gas emissions. It’s non-toxic, and not an environmental hazard if released. Propane-powered appliances heat up 40% faster than electric ones and contains 2 times more energy than natural gas.
