Propane Perspectives

A CF One Member’s Guide to Fueling Your Home with Propane

Avenir Energy simplifies propane service for anyone moving into a new home or community, whether you are relocating for a posting, settling after a transition, purchasing a home, taking over an existing propane setup, or switching to propane for the first time. Through the CANEX Home Heating Program, CF One members save 8¢ per litre on propane delivery, keep their discount when they move, and may qualify for up to $350 off new propane equipment. For existing Avenir customers, the Property Transfer team handles the paperwork from closing date to first delivery, so you can focus on settling in.

Canadian Armed Forces family preparing for a move to a new home

Moves and life transitions can happen quickly for the military community. One week you’re settled, the next you’re packing boxes, coordinating movers, enrolling kids in new schools, and trying to figure out how to transfer every utility and service to a new address across the province or the country.

Your home heating should not be one more complicated item on that list.

At Avenir Energy, we’ve worked with the CAF Community and families navigating moves, military relocations, home purchases, and first-time propane setups through our 47 branches across Canada. We also work every day with homebuyers moving into existing propane-heated homes, and with customers who are brand new to propane and simply want to know what to expect. Whatever your situation, we know that the smallest logistical headache, like figuring out what happens to the propane tank at your old house, or whether you’ll have heat when you arrive at your new one, can feel enormous when you’re already managing so much.

That’s why we built a property transfer and onboarding process designed to take this off your plate. And if you’re already enrolled in the CANEX Home Heating Program, your 8¢ per litre discount moves with you.

This guide walks you through what happens when you leave, what happens when you arrive, and how to make sure you’re set up with reliable propane delivery before you unpack your first box.

Moving to a Home That Already Runs on Propane? Here’s What to Do First

If you’ve purchased a home that runs on propane through Avenir, the transition is simpler than you might think. The tank stays put, Avenir Energy owns it, and our team coordinates the account transfer as part of the closing process. If you’re arriving at a new home that’s already set up for propane, this is one item you can check off early. We transfer the account into your name and keep the heat on right through your move-in date.

You don’t need to source a new tank, arrange an installation, or figure out the paperwork on your own. We work directly with you and your lawyers to make sure the account is in your name, your first delivery is scheduled, and your home is warm when you arrive.

To take over service at an existing propane home, you’ll need to complete:

  • A Credit Application

  • A new Propane Supply Agreement

Our team will send these documents through your purchasing lawyer, so they fit right into your existing closing process. Once signed, your account is set up for automatic propane delivery and wireless tank monitoring—so you always know your level without having to check a gauge.

If you’re an eligible CF One member, this is also the perfect time to activate your CANEX discount right from day one.

New to Propane? Welcome—Here’s What to Expect

If you’ve never used propane before, it’s completely normal to have questions. The good news: propane is a clean, reliable, and versatile energy source—and Avenir Energy makes getting started straightforward. Many CAF families meet propane for the first time during a move, home purchase, posting, or transition to a new community. If that’s you, you’re in good company, and we’ll walk you through your first setup step by step.

Propane powers furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, dryers, ranges, and even outdoor equipment like pool heaters and BBQs. For homes in rural and suburban areas without access to natural gas, it’s one of the most dependable heating options available.

Here’s what the process looks like when you’re starting fresh:

Step 1 – We assess your home.
Contact your local Avenir branch and tell us about your home and heating needs. Our knowledgeable team will walk you through tank size options and the best setup for your situation.

Step 2 – We handle installation.
Avenir installs propane tanks in compliance with all local and national safety codes. New tank installations are typically scheduled within 4 business days of account setup. We’ll confirm a date that works for you.

Step 3 – We keep you supplied.
Once your tank is in place, you’re enrolled in automatic delivery. We monitor your usage and schedule deliveries before you run low—so you never have to wonder when the truck is coming.

Step 4 – You manage everything online.
Through the My Account portal, you can check your tank level, view delivery history, pay your bill, and more—all from your phone or computer.

There’s no steep learning curve. Most new propane customers tell us within the first few months that they barely think about it—which is exactly how we like it.

“You worry about life. We’ll handle the propane.”

How Do I Notify Avenir That I’m Moving Out of a Home You Serve?

Call or email your local Avenir branch as soon as you have your legal closing date. That’s really all it takes to get the process started.

Once you’ve made that first contact, our Property Transfer team takes over. We coordinate directly with you, your lawyer, and the purchaser’s lawyer to ensure that final billing is handled securely and that propane service continues uninterrupted for the incoming homeowner.

You won’t need to chase anyone down or manage the handoff yourself. We handle that communication—so you can focus on the move.

What you’ll need to have ready:

  • Your legal closing date

  • New billing address

  • Contact information for both your lawyer and the purchaser’s lawyer

That’s the full list. We take it from there.

What Happens to My CANEX Discount When I Relocate?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from the CAF Community and the answer is a good one.

Your 8¢ per litre CANEX propane discount moves with you, provided your new address falls within Avenir’s service area. Because arriving at a new home or community can happen on short timelines, we’ve built the transfer process to be just as fast.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Provide us with your new address and closing date

  2. We set up your new account

  3. We verify your CF One card

  4. Your instant discount is applied starting with your first delivery

No gaps. No re-qualifying. No filling out the same forms twice.

And if your new home requires new propane equipment—a furnace, boiler, or water heater—you may also qualify for up to $350 in discounts on propane equipment installation. That’s real savings at exactly the moment you need them most.

Not yet enrolled in the CANEX Home Heating Program? Register here through the CANEX website and start saving 8¢ per litre on your delivered propane. It takes minutes, and your CF One card is all you need to confirm eligibility.

How Does a New Homeowner Take Over an Existing Avenir Propane Tank?

When a property changes hands, the propane tank stays put. Avenir Energy owns the tank, and we coordinate its transfer as part of the property closing process.

The incoming homeowner takes over service by completing two things:

  1. A Credit Application

  2. A new Propane Supply Agreement

Our team sends these documents directly to you or through your purchasing lawyer, so the paperwork fits into the existing closing process rather than adding something new to manage.

Once those documents are signed, your account is set up for automatic propane delivery and wireless tank monitoring—two features that make a real difference for families who can’t always be home to watch a gauge.

If you’re an eligible CF One member, the property transfer is also the perfect moment to present your CF One card and activate your CANEX discount. You don’t need to wait until your first delivery—get it set up at the start.

Why Do I Need to Sign a New Propane Supply Agreement?

Because Avenir Energy owns the propane tank, the legal responsibility for it—billing, liability, and safety—must transfer formally to the new homeowner at closing.

The Propane Supply Agreement isn’t complicated, but it is important. It covers:

  • Safety responsibilities for the equipment on your property

  • Equipment terms and conditions

  • Payment options, including budget billing plans to spread your heating costs evenly across the year

One important note for renters: tenants moving into a rental property do not need to sign a Propane Supply Agreement, as long as the landlord already holds a valid account with Avenir Energy. If you’re unsure which situation applies to you, contact your local Avenir branch and we’ll walk you through it.

Does Avenir Remove the Propane Tank When I Sell My Property?

No. In the vast majority of cases, Avenir Energy leaves the propane tank at the property to ensure the new homeowner has continuous access to reliable service.

The tank remains safely in place while we work with the lawyers and the incoming homeowner to transfer the account. A tank pickup is only scheduled if the new homeowner chooses a different supplier and our team has formally closed the account.

For CF One members selling a home quickly this matters. There’s no scramble to organize a tank removal before closing. No risk of delays. Just a clean, coordinated handoff, managed by our Property Transfer team from start to finish.

Tools That Make Life Easier After You Arrive

Getting your propane account set up is just the beginning. Once you’re settled in your new home, Avenir Energy offers a few tools that take propane completely off your mental load—whether you’re a returning Avenir customer, new to propane, or managing a household solo during a deployment.

Wireless Tank Monitoring

Avenir’s wireless tank monitoring tracks your propane level in real time. You’ll know exactly how much is in the tank without stepping outside. For families managing a busy household—or one parent deployed while the other handles everything at home—this kind of visibility matters. No guessing. No surprise run-outs.

My Account Portal

Through the My Account portal, you can:

  • View your current tank level

  • Check your delivery status and history

  • View and pay your bill online

  • Review past service calls

  • Schedule a propane refill with a few clicks

Everything in one place, available whenever you need it. No phone call required.

24ProPlus Service Plans (Ontario)

For Avenir customers in Ontario, 24ProPlus™ is our premium equipment service plan. It provides priority service, annual maintenance coverage, and the kind of peace of mind that comes from knowing your propane equipment is looked after—before anything goes wrong. This is especially valuable if you’re new to propane and want the confidence of knowing a team is watching out for your equipment year-round. Ask your local Avenir team about 24ProPlus™ availability when you set up your account.

Budget Billing

Propane costs can vary month to month depending on the season. For customers new to propane, this is one of the easiest ways to get comfortable with how heating costs work. It’s one of the options you can discuss when signing your new Propane Supply Agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions: Moving During the Posting Season and Propane Setup

How early should I contact Avenir Energy before my closing date?

Contact Avenir Energy as soon as you have a confirmed legal closing date. The earlier you reach out, the more time our Property Transfer team has to coordinate with both lawyers and set up your new account before you arrive—ensuring there’s no gap in service.

Can I transfer my CANEX propane discount if I’m moving to a new province?

Yes, provided your new address is within Avenir Energy’s service area. Simply give us your new address and closing date, and we’ll verify your CF One card and apply your 8¢ per litre CANEX discount starting from your first delivery at the new property.

What if the new home I’m moving into doesn’t already have a propane tank?

If your new home requires a new propane tank installation, contact your local Avenir branch to arrange a tank set-up. Our team will assess your home’s heating needs, recommend the right tank size, and confirm an installation date—typically within 4 business days of account setup. As a CANEX program member, you may also qualify for up to $350 in discounts on new propane equipment like a furnace, boiler, or water heater.

I’ve never used propane before. Is it complicated to get started?

Not at all. Getting started with propane is straightforward. Contact your local Avenir branch and we’ll walk you through everything—tank sizing, installation, delivery options, and how to use the My Account portal to keep an eye on your supply. Most new propane customers are surprised by how little they have to think about it once everything is set up. That’s by design.

What propane appliances can I run in my home?

Propane is a versatile fuel that can power your furnace, water heater, fireplace, dryer, and kitchen range—as well as outdoor equipment like pool heaters, patio heaters, and BBQs. If you’re new to propane and unsure what’s compatible with your home, your local Avenir team can help you figure out the right setup.

Do tenants need to sign a Propane Supply Agreement?

No. Tenants renting a property do not need to sign a Propane Supply Agreement, provided the landlord already holds a valid account with Avenir Energy. Contact your local Avenir branch to confirm the status of the account before moving in.

How does wireless tank monitoring work for CF One Members?

Avenir Energy’s wireless tank monitoring tracks your propane level remotely and in real time. You can view your tank level through the My Account portal from any device. This is especially useful for families managing a busy household, relocating, travelling, away for training or deployment, or new to propane and looking for reassurance about exactly what’s in their tank.

What is the 24ProPlus™service plan and who is it available to?

24ProPlus™ is Avenir Energy’s premium equipment service plan, currently available to customers in Ontario. It includes priority service response, annual maintenance coverage, and dedicated support for your propane heating equipment. If you’re new to propane and want added peace of mind around your equipment, it’s worth asking about. Talk to your local Avenir team about eligibility when setting up your new account.

What documents are needed to complete a property transfer with Avenir Energy?

Avenir Energy requires the legal closing date, the new billing address, and contact information for both the seller’s and purchaser’s lawyers. Our Property Transfer team uses these details to coordinate the full account transition on your behalf.

I’m switching from oil heat to propane. What do I need to know?

Converting from oil to propane is a smart move for many homeowners—propane is cleaner, more energy-efficient, and available through Avenir’s coast-to-coast delivery network. If you’re making the switch, your local Avenir team in Ontario, Nova Scotia, PEI and NWT will assess your home’s current heating setup, recommend compatible propane equipment, and manage the full installation process. Depending on your eligibility, CANEX program members may also qualify for equipment discounts to help offset conversion costs.

Can Avenir set up propane at my new home before I arrive?

Yes. As soon as you have a confirmed closing or possession date, contact your local Avenir branch and we’ll schedule your account setup, tank transfer or installation, and first delivery so your heat is on before you arrive—even when you’re arriving on short notice.

I’m moving outside Avenir’s service area. What happens to my account and CANEX discount?

Let your local branch know your closing date and new address. We’ll settle your final billing cleanly and coordinate any tank pickup with the incoming homeowner. If your new address is still within Avenir’s service area, your 8¢ per litre CANEX discount moves with you without re-qualifying. If your move takes you outside our area, we’ll make sure everything is closed out before you go.

Do I need to be home when Avenir transfers or installs the propane tank?

In most cases, no. For a home that already runs on propane, the tank stays put and we handle the account transfer with your lawyers—no site visit needed on your end. For a new tank installation, we’ll confirm a date that works and only need brief access to complete the setup safely.

How far ahead of a move should I contact Avenir?

As soon as you have a firm closing date. Posting-season timelines move fast, so the earlier you reach out, the more room our Property Transfer team has to coordinate both lawyers, set up your account, and schedule your first delivery before you unpack.
